Practical advice for conveyancing professionals

Use these pointers to present your residential property experience clearly and assess whether a vacancy is the right move for you.

Writing a conveyancing CV

Make the scope of your work easy to understand. Include your qualification and admission date where applicable, the residential property transactions you handle, approximate caseload, client type, lender panel exposure and the degree of supervision you need or provide.

Name the case-management systems you use and explain any experience of supervising assistants, checking title, handling complex leasehold work, new build transactions, shared ownership, transfers of equity or remortgages. Avoid relying on a generic statement that you “handle conveyancing”.

Applying for remote or hybrid work

Remote conveyancing roles usually require evidence that you can manage files, deadlines, client communication and internal reporting away from the office. State how often you have worked remotely, for how long and how you maintained supervision and compliance.

Check whether “remote” means fully home-based throughout the UK or home working within travelling distance of a particular office. Some firms require office attendance during induction or for occasional meetings.

Questions to ask at interview

  • What is the usual active caseload and transaction mix?
  • What administrative and paralegal support is available?
  • How are new enquiries allocated and converted?
  • Which case-management and search systems does the team use?
  • How is work supervised and how often are files reviewed?
  • What are the office attendance and working-hour expectations?
  • Are there billing, completion or cross-selling targets?

Comparing opportunities

Salary matters, but so do caseload expectations, support, management quality, systems, flexibility and the complexity of work. A well-supported role with realistic volumes may offer better progression than a higher headline salary attached to an unsustainable workload.
